Greek Ambassador and GNTO host London Sustainable Sailing event
In December 2023, the Greek National Tourism Organisation supported us to organise an event for the British charter sailing market, which was kindly hosted by the Greek Ambassador, Mr Ioannis Tsaousis at his official residence.
The event was co-hosted by the Ionian Environment Foundation, and brought together a cross section of committed organisations and people involved in sailing in Greece to share experiences and ideas on how to make the charter sailing sector in Greece more sustainable. Representatives from charter and flotilla companies were joined by World Sailing, charter brokers, press, and travel agents. During the evening, our Founder Christina chaired a panel with Pip Tyler (Neilson), Claire Shields (Sunsail) and Rod Heikell (author of the Greek Waters Pilot book). The panelists shared their views on what good practices they have seen or started to deploy, and gave one clear message: a sustainable sailing sector in Greece can really help with the preservation of marine ecosystems and support the development of coastal communities.
The Ambassador also highlighted the importance of the Sustainable Sailing Greece guide, as it was making information accessible for the thousands of visitors who charter boats. Christina complemented this, and noted that the evening was a perfect example of how the aim of Sustainable Sailing Greece is to not only offer some practical guidance, but also get a wide group of organisations to be part of the conversation on what needs to happen to protect the amazing coastal communities and waters of Greece.
